Updated: 5/15/2021
Effective 5/16/2021, daily positive COVID-19 cases and deaths will no longer be updated on this website. For statistics on positive cases of COVID-19 in South River, click here.
The South River Police Department has been notified by the Middlesex County Health Department that one thousand nine hundred thirty four (1,934) total South River residents have tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19). We have not been advised if these cases are isolating at home or hospitalized.
We regret to say we have been informed that twenty four (24) South River residents have passed away due to COVID-19. Please keep them and their families in your prayers.
To date, we have not been notified of any cases having fully recovered. We have inquired about getting this information but we are unsure if we will be receiving it. If it is provided to us we plan on including it in future updates. This does not mean that none of the cases have recovered. We are just not being informed of the total number of recoveries.
Although we cannot reveal specific locations or areas where positive COVID-19 cases are located, we can say that cases are evenly distributed throughout the town and there does not seem to be a cluster or hotspot in any one location or area of South River. Further information on how the COVID-19 notification process works can be found below.
Due to feedback we have received from residents and the fact that we are not receiving information regarding recoveries, home isolations, or hospitalizations, our last daily update provided via NIXLE alerts an social media will be Saturday, April 25th. After that date, we will be providing weekly updates every Saturday via NIXLE and social media. The totals on this website will continue to be updated daily.

HOW THE COVID-19 NOTIFICATION PROCESS WORKS
Each law enforcement agency must designate a single point of contact with the Health Department. When a South River resident tests positive for COVID-19, the contact person for our department is notified of the resident’s name, address, age and sex. Our contact person then enters that information into our department’s Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
In the event there is a call for service at an address of a resident with COVID-19, our CAD system alerts the dispatcher. The dispatcher then alerts responding personnel to take the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) precautions. This is the only time the information is known to other employees of the South River Police Department, aside from our designated point of contact.
Some residents have inquired about the ages and sex of COVID-19 cases as well as a general area where they reside. Simply put, we cannot share that. Consistent with the guidelines we must follow, even our police officers and other first responders are not made aware of that information unless the need arises for them to respond to the person’s residence. We will continue to share with our residents the number of positive COVID-19 cases in South River.
The Middlesex County Health Department is the lead in the investigation of these cases and is responsible for all notifications. Neither the South River Police Department nor the Borough of South River receive information that identifies the place of employment, previous whereabouts, or previous movements of individuals who test positive for COVID-19. Notifications to any workplaces, businesses, or individuals who infected persons may have had contact with is done by the Health Department.
