Welcome to the Official Website of the South River Police Department
As part of National Teen Driver Safety Week, the South River Police Department is making parents and teen drivers aware of 6 of the greatest dangers to teen drivers as well as promoting the Parent – Teen Driving Agreement.
6 Teen Rules of the Road
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the United States, ahead of all other types of injury, disease, or violence. Parents can have the biggest influence on teens' choices behind the wheel if they take the time to talk with their teens about the biggest driving risks. Parents are encouraged to have conversations with their teen drivers to help them stay safe while driving.
These 6 rules are a good starting point address the greatest dangers for teen drivers:
No Cell Phones: 10% of teen drivers involved in fatal crashes were distracted
No Passengers: Teens are at a greater risk of crashes when driving with passengers
No Speeding: One third of teen drivers involved in fatal crashes were speeding
No Alcohol: One out of five teen drivers involved in fatal crashes were drinking
No Drowsy Driving: Teen drivers account for 1 out of every 10 drowsy driving crashes
Always Buckle Up: Over half of those killed in cars driven by teen drivers were unbuckled
Parent – Teen Driving Agreement
The Parent – Teen Driving Agreement is a tool designed to help ensure your teen drivers are driving safely and responsibly. As part of this agreement, teen drivers agree to obey the rules of the road, avoid certain behaviors and follow restrictions imposed by parents. Teen drivers also understand that parents will impose penalties and further restrictions for violating the agreement. In turn, parents agree to be a positive role model when it comes to driving safely and responsibly. Parents also agree to lessen the restrictions on their teen drivers as they gain more driving experience and demonstrate positive driving habits.
